Today I used the beautiful weather to take advantage of our Louisville Metro Parks.  I took the dogs to Otter Creek Park for a run, a swim, and a commune with nature.  I had a blast even though the water was a little dirty.  Scratch that, it was brown and nasty.  Oh well…  When the water so cloudy you can’t see the bottom, it just makes it easier to pretend there are no animals lurking below your toes.

I really love Otter Creek but every time I go I’m reminded of that tragic day a few years ago when Icarus broke his leg.  It’s hard to forget when I’m still paying 9% interest on the damn thing.

As usual I took the dogs about 2.5 miles in going over the paths and running in the creek.  I had on a pair of old tennis shoes to protect my feet from critters and rocks.  I would have taken my camera to give you some nice pictures but I decided that today was just for fun.  That and it’s hard to convince myself to take a $5000 camera near sand, dirt, and water.

On the way back I took off my shoes and traveled only on the dirt path made by hundreds of other feet before me.  Other than a few rocks and such to poke me in my tender tootsies, it was nice.  The path was soft and squishy with a few muddy spots along the way.  I think people forget how nice it can be to just walk along in nature with the mud working between your toes.  The only sounds to be heard are of birds and the workings of the forrest.  Almost like white noise the water rushes in the background to take the edge off of the stillness.

Icarus, Akasha, and I walked for about 3 hours and only saw maybe four other people.  It was fun.

I took this while out with the dogs.  I like the way it turned out so I wanted to put it up here.

So for shit’s and giggles today I let Icarus and Akasha out in the ditch to chase George. I knew they wouldn’t catch him, so don’t give me any grief. I only had my iPhone on me so the quality isn’t that great. It’s cute though.  Talk about a good laugh.  They both just kept digging to get down that hole.  Every once in a while George would squeak and it would reinvigorate their interest in the two openings.

Akasha goes in first

They go in at both ends

My smaller dog, Akasha, eats her poop.  This is appalling to me.  Not only does it make her breath stink, but her ass is like an Alpo Rotten Egg canon.

Just wanted to share.

Akasha’s ToenailGenerally toenails don’t cost any money.  This changes when its the toenail of a dog.

Yesterday when I got home all was well.  I had to call a teacher to do a screen share at 5:45pm.  I let the dogs out and started cooking some popcorn chicken.  When I let the dogs back in I noticed some blood on the floor.  I tracked down which dog was bleeding and finally found out where the blood was coming from.

Apparently Akasha somehow broke the end of her toenail off all the way back to the quick.  Ouch!  I was so screwed!  Jeremy was heading over to drop off Sadie, I had a screen share at 5:45, the vet closed at 7:00pm and the screen share wouldn’t be over until 8:00pm.

I called Dusty to see what she thought about the whole situation.  She called her vet to get some quick advice and see how late they were open.  They told her it was a pretty simple thing but there would be some antibiotics and some pain medication.  Total…maybe $100.

No Freakin Way!

After some heated debate with the voices in my head, I decided to run on over to Dixie Animal Hospital.  I didn’t want to cut the toenail off myself out of fear of her bleeding.  I also didn’t want to have to fumble around causing her pain the whole time.  A Dr. could do it ten times faster than I could.

I was lucky they didn’t have a lot of people in line.  I wanted to get in and out quickly so I could get back to the screen sharing.  The Dr. took Akasha back and chopped that booger off.  Then she came out and told me Akasha needed some antibiotics and pain meds.  Surprise.  I declined.  Come on people, does anyone remember the days when we waited to see if there was a problem before fixing it?  Besides, the meds were going to be like $75.  They told me Akasha would probably get a staff infection which would go into the bone and she would die.

WTF?  I paid 8K for Icarus’ leg.  If she gets some type of infection, I’ll just have to pay to get her better.
